The Black, Queer Horror Fan with a Podcast

If you’ve found me, you’re a horror fan, Black, Queer, or all of the above. When I started my podcast, I wanted to create a safe space for horror fans of marginalized identities. Horror is sort of a safe space for us already: it represents all of the other in society. However, other podcasts don’t always look at horror from that critical standpoint.

Who am I?

Before I was a podcast host, and before I made horror my entire personality, I was a partial film student. I say partial because I got a certificate in Film Studies (not as exciting as a degree but cheaper). After graduating though, I didn’t have a space to study, talk, and analyze films. So, I created one of my own.

First encounter with horror:

I have a terrible memory. If you listen to the podcast, you’ll know I can barely remember movie character names. However, I like to say 2006 was a prominent year for me and my love for horror. It’s the first time, I think, I went to the theater to see a horror movie: The Strangers.

That’s the same year Final Destination 3 also came out; which was life changing for good and bad reasons (still have never been to a tanning bed).

Favorite horror movie/book:

I LOVE Wes Craven’s People Under The Stairs for an older horror movie, and I love Julia DeCournau’s Raw for a newer horror movie.

Anything by Grady Hendrix is a favorite book of mine

When my love for horror stems from:

Horror was something my family and I bonded over when I was a child. As I grew older, though, I developed a stronger love for the way it reflects society and it’s fears/flaws. On the other side of the coin, horror has a powerful way of eliciting more than fear from it’s audience. I enjoy the experience of watching others’ reactions to horror.

I’ll often include previews to episodes in my newsletters so you’ll still get to listen if you choose to :)
