Hello all my horror friends and fiends! It’s been too long. I write alllll of the time, but I’ve neglected the Substack. This summer has too many things to look forward to, though. So, let’s talk about what’s ahead.
ICYMI: I’m deep diving into horror sub-genres this summer. May has been the month of zombies with a feature from the authors of ‘The Summer I Ate the Rich’. Maritza and Maika Moulite serve up Haitian mythos on our episode together, and it was just as fun as it was insightful! Give it a listen and consider checking out their book.

What we know about Talk 2 Me
The Philippou brothers made a hell of a debut with the 2023 release Talk to Me. It quickly became horror fans’ favorite watch of the year and, even, of all time. The planned sequel was teased only a few weeks after the first film’s release. Though it’s still coming, we won’t see it anytime soon. In a recent interview, they explained, “… it’s about stepping away from the world and then coming back into it super reinvigorated. So that’s why we didn’t do that next.”. They have two different scripts for the film that they need to choose between, but there are two other projects on their slate before Talk 2 Me begins production.
Official Trailer Drop for Welcome to Derry
Bill Skarsgård is returning as Pennywise for the prequel series Welcome to Derry. Using Mike Hanlon’s interludes in Stephen King’s original novel, the HBO series will follow the events in 1962 that led up to the timeline of the 2017 remake. Andy Muschietti, who directed the revival, is also returning to direct a few episodes and has even teased seasons to come. Though a release date still hasn’t been set, it’s planned for this fall!
What to Add to Your Watchlist
Dangerous Animals (dir. Sean Bryne)
From Shudder and IFC Films, the movie follows a surfer trapped on a killer’s boat with hungry sharks circling below. It’s a traditional killer shark movie with a twist and just in time for summer. Though I haven’t seen it yet, it’s a highly anticipated watch for many! It’s starring Hassie Harrison (“Yellowstone”), Jai Courtney (The Suicide Squad) and Josh Heuston (“Heartbreak High”).

Bring Her Back
The Philippou brothers are back with their second feature and it’s just as jarring as the first. It’s about a brother and sister who uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother. But it’s best that you go into it with as little knowledge as possible. I saw this at the beginning of this month. I, in fact, cried at the end. There’s so much grief and sorrow and pain in the story. At the Q&A for the film, Danny Philippou spoke about the personal grief that inspired him to explore the theme further. If you’d like to hear more of my thoughts, check out my full review here
Be sure to catch this one in theaters May 30th
And that’s a wrap….
