My horror friends and fiends. I hope the end of the year is wrapping up kindly and peacefully. With today’s new moon, I’m feeling a bit reflective and prospective. What lessons did I learn this year? What can I do better next year? But most importantly… will next year’s horror live up to 2024’s releases?
I made a Letterboxd list of my top 2024 watches if you’re interested in peeking. It’s no surprise that I Saw The TV Glow made it. I fear we won’t be seeing as many original narratives like that in the new year. I’m still excited for what’s to come, though!
The Monkey (February 2025)
Horror Comedy
Based off of a short story by Stephen, the King himself, Theo James portrays twin brothers with a secret: a killer family heirloom. They have to reconcile to hunt the toy monkey down before it’s body count grows. If you’re ready to see more from Longlegs Director Osgood Perkins, you’re gonna want to add this to your watchlist.
Heart Eyes (February 2025)
Slasher Comedy
I love holiday horror and have been wanting more specific to Valentine’s Day. My Blood Valentine is getting overplayed! I think the best approach to a holiday horror story is with a touch of humor. However, this is a SpyGlass production- the same studio as Scream 7. The good news: I think this will be go to streaming rather quickly.
Woman in the Yard (March 2025)
Psychological Horror
The title speaks for itself. It’s our first Black horror of the year, though! I saw a preview of it at ComicCon this year and it looks promising. It is Blumhouse, though, and they tend to either hit or miss—no inbetween.
Clown in A Cornfield (May 2025)
Slasher Horror- Book Adaptation
If you have a fear of clowns or the Midwest, you may want to sit this one out. Eli Craig, director of Tucker & Dale VS Evil, has adapted Adam Cesare’s YA slasher into a feature film! I couldn’t be more excited about this, because I love the series and a good slasher. Check out my episode with the author!
The Bride (September 2025)
Sci-Fi Horror Musical?
Um, I see this being treated similarly to Poor Things in the sense that there will be a STARK difference between those who enjoy it and those who don’t. I’m just excited that we’re in a Gothic literature renaissance! It takes inspiration from James Whales’ The Bride of Frankenstein, but it’s written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal.
I Know What You Did Last Summer (July 2025)
Slasher Horror
IKWYDLS is getting the Scream treatment with a requel of its own and I’m alive at the same time it’s happening. Honestly, I just love Freddie Prinze Jr. and nostalgia. I’ll continue to be a remake hater, but you can find me in the theater opening day.
Yellowjackets Season 3 (February 2025)
Our favorite cannibalistic soccer team is finally back after THREE YEARS! Because of the SAG-AFTRA & WGA strikes in 2023, the show’s production had been paused. I won’t mention which cast members aren’t returning in case you haven’t seen season 2 yet. Three new names were added to the cast list though: Hillary Swank in a recurring role, Joel McHale as a guest star, and Jason Ritter makes a cameo! The showrunners are describing this season as the “meltdown”- as in the melting of winter and their last string of sanity.
There are so many other horror releases coming soon! We got some new franchise additions: Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, Final Destination 6, & Thanksgiving 2. I can’t forget about the books coming to shelves, too! One worth mentioning is the one being featured on the first podcast episode of Season 9. I can FINALLY say Grady Hendrix is coming on the show!! His January 2025 novel Witchcraft for Wayward Girls will be a feminist horror favorite. And you can hear that episode next Thursday!
I hope you added something new to your 2025 watchlist. Support horror when and where you can. Show out to the theaters on opening weekend and check out the niche indie horror that could very well become your favorite! That’s how we can keep the genre alive.
